People above the age of 65 in Kisii have a reason to smile after the Catholic church offered to house them and cater for their needs.
Speaking during the declaration for the help on Thursday, Kisii Town Parish Coordinator, Deacon Francis Monari said the programme targets 50 people to start with.
Monari who doubles as the Kisii University Dean of Students said the programme will absorb other people after the launch.
He said there were many aging people coming to the church seeking for help.
“We are having more old people seeking services from the main parish and this necessitated rolling out of the programme," he said.
"We are expecting to carter for at least 50 of them as a church and we may consider increasing the number when the parish will be able to source for more funds."
According to Monari, catechists will identify the beneficiaries before being admitted to the care centre.
“We will liaise with the catechists to identify members who are avid church goers though we do not intend to discriminate because the church serves everyone. It is however appropriate to give staunch members of the church first priority."
Monari said the parish is in talks with the Kisii County government to come with a concrete memorandum of understanding that will see the program supported by the county government.
