Kenyans have been urged to consume more milk and cheese to improve their health.

Mrs Mary Orege, a nutritionist at Egerton University during a seminar on nutrition at the university said that cheese consumption in Kenya was below average yet it is a good source of nutrients.

Orege said cheese contains more nutrients per unit compared to milk.

''Cheese is a nutrient dense food which contains many nutrients per unit,'' she said.

She added that whereas cheese contains all the nutrients found in milk, it has varying quantities like entrapped moisture, which contains the water soluble constituents of milk such as lactose, protein, soluble salt, vitamins and other minor milk components.

She urged parents to make it a 'snack of choice' for their children and pack it for them in their lunch boxes.

She added that diseases can be reduced significantly if Kenyans consume cheese since a bar of cheese contains more milk than a glass of milk.

Orege said scientific research has proved beyond doubt that milk strengthens bones and prevents bone diseases, which are prevalent in women.
