Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno has warned individuals alleged to have been conning residents claiming they belong to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Speaking to journalists at his office on Monday, Chemno said the county government will launch a crackdown on the supposed NGOs, which he says are operating illegally.

Chemno said that some NGOs are operating in the county without the required legal documents.

The Deputy Governor said they have received information that some NGOs are collecting funds from the public with the promise of helping them get jobs and other services.

“We have information that some NGOs are operating illegally and want to tell them that we are coming for them,” he said.

The Deputy Governor alleged that the fake NGOs are mostly targeting the youth who are unemployed promising them jobs if they pay them a certain amount of money.

He advised residents to be vigilant and report people they suspect to be conmen to the police.

Over the weekend, police arrested 15 people who are said to be officials of a fake NGO who were allegedly conning the youth with a promise of giving the jobs. Chemno said the suspects will be arraigned in court once police complete their investigations.
