Kitutu Masaba parliamentary aspirant Victor Swanya has called on the government to source for money and pay teachers to end the strike that is entering fourth week, on Monday.
Speaking on Saturday at Tombe in Nyamira County, Swanya advised the government to borrow the government to pay teachers to restore learning in schools.
“The government should be serious in addressing teachers' issue. Closing up of schools cannot solve the pending issues between the two. The government should borrow, Sh17 billion for teachers is not too much for the government to afford,” said Swanya.
“The government must look into the welfare of our children by establishing an amicable remedy over the ongoing strike that has struck teaching in our schools. The strike is likely to affect candidates who are about to sit for their exams,” he added.
Kenya Social Congress chairman Atuti Kengere said he supports teachers strike, and advised them to never end it till their pay rise is respected and honoured.
“The government must respect the supreme court ruling that ruled teachers to be given a 50-60 percent pay hike. I ask President Uhuru Kenyan to respect independent institutions,” he added.
