Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said the county government will upgrade the Coast Provincial General Hospital to a referral status.
Governor Joho said the hospital will be transformed into a teaching and referral hospital by early next year.
According to the governor, the hospital receives a huge number of patients who come from various areas in the region and upgrading the hospital will cater for the needy patients.
“The hospital is overwhelmed and receives patients from far flung areas coming to seek treatment here,” he said.
He added: “The Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board approved the upgrade of the hospital due to the high population and cases handled daily.”
Speaking on Friday when he toured the facility, Governor Joho said they will establish the first oncology centre at the hospital in three months.
“We are going to buy other equipment for specialised treatment like cancer. The hospital will be equipped with modern equipments such as dialysis and cancer screening machines,” said Joho.
The governor further announced that the hospital will soon be offering medical courses which will be in partnership with area universities.
“The medical board had visited the facility and said we shall be licensed to offer medical training. The hospital has renovated two main wards which are now fully functioning," said Joho.
The governor added that the hospital will receive about 200 new state-of-the-art beds which are being shipped and expected in the country by end of this month.
