Athi River police poured over 6,200 litres of illicit local brew seized from illegal distillers from different parts of Athi River town during the ongoing crack down.

Speaking on Wednesday in Athi River, Mavoko Deputy County Commissioner Kodeck Makori who led the confiscation exercise said the liquor was recovered from local breweries along 'Mto Wa Mawe' river and Kanaani slums in Kinanie and Mavoko divisions on Monday and Tuesday nights respectively.

Makori said the joint operations conducted with guidance of the region's security and intelligence committee under his leadership raided the notorious dens after getting information from the public.

He said they collected 1,200 and 5,000 litres from Mto wa Mawe and Kanaani slums respectively.

"We conducted a joint raid on Monday and Tuesday nights and successfully seized 6,200 litres of chang'aa and Kang'ara from Mto Wa Mawe and Kanaani slums within Athi River sub county," said Makori.

Makori said the brew was stored in 56 drums of 200 litres and several 20 litre jerrycans.

He said there were no persons arrested in connection to the illegal trade adding that the dens were located in isolated bushy places where there were neither residences nor houses for owners to spend nights in.

The commissioner was accompanied by Mavoko police boss Kizito Mutoro and area AP Commandant Stephen Matu, both who vowed not to relent in the war against illicit brew and other hard drugs and substances from the region.

Mutoro said illicit liquor leads to an increase in crime since drunkards do everything possible to raise money to buy alcohol and other substances thereby engaging in criminal activities.

He said the police had arrested 37 people who were found operating illegal businesses other than trading in illicit brew and would be arraigned in court on Thursday.

Makori appealed to members of the public to continue volunteering information which can lead to arrests of those engaged in conducting illegal businesses in the region.

"Members of the public should continue volunteering leading information to the police to help arrest illegal traders," said Makori.

He said there would be no vacuum in the sub-county as far as fighting crime and illegal businesses is concerned hence advised culprits to get other legitimate businesses to avoid facing dire consequences.
