Mama Care, a community-based organisation has held a voluntary training session on improving hygiene at Nyawita Market, Kisumu West Sub County.

The training session on Friday was attended by both pupils and locals of Nyawita.

The organisation which is headed by Plato Griffins, an American national, aims to enlighten the community on hygiene by demonstrating how to build cheap hand-washing stations and toilets from locally available materials.

The organisation was started in 2011 and they have been in Baringo County where they rolled out similar programmes.

They also have a number of mobile toilets and hand-washing equipment which Plato says they sell. They also train on entrepreneurship.

Mama Otieno, a resident of Nyawita, asked the government to educate mothers on the importance of hygiene to help curb diseases arising from unhygienic conditions.

Dennis Ombongo, a health officer at Maseno applauded the move saying it will help curb common diseases and especially the threat of a cholera outbreak.
