Kisii County residents have called upon the county administration to chip in and curb alleged rampant grabbing of public land in Kisii town and its environs.
Speaking at Mwembe estate during a small demonstration organised against alleged private developers in the region, former Mwembe Councilor Peter Mrefu said most government lands had been grabbed by senior politicians in the region.
He threatened to come up with a list of the beneficiaries if the county government failed to take a decisive action against the culprits.
“The town has been grabbed by senior officials some of whom the governor is aware of. The rate at which public land is being grabbed is worrying yet the county government is doing absolutely nothing to avert the incidents. I will soon make the list public,” he said.
Mrefu urged residents to be vigilant, besides threatening to present official petition to have official land officials sacked over what he called ‘gross misconduct’.
“We must stand up and protect the land; whether private or public. They both contribute towards expansion of our economy and few forces cannot grab what belongs to us. The county government ought to act expeditiously. That is why we are calling upon governor to take action,” he added.
The county government has been under immense pressure to act on land grabbers, with Mwembe residents managing to destroy a building that was erected on a land that was allegedly grabbed from an aging granny.
