The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will provide water hyacinth harvester machine for the five counties around Lake Victoria.
In a speech read on behalf of Environment Principal Secretary Dr Richard Lesiyampe by Amb Julius Kandie, the machine is from Italy.
Kandie said that the machine will benefit Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Siaya and Busia.
"Therefore we are hoping that in the next few years, water hyacinth will be a thing of the past. The harvester is going to sort the mess of the water hyacinth at the lake and interventions of water catchment areas in Nandi, Kericho, Bomet," he said.
Kandie was speaking during the handing over of the Sh416 million sewerage project to the Kisumu County government on Wednesday at Kisat.
"As part of LVEMP projects, we are rehabilitating degraded areas, river banks and more importantly the wetlands. In the Nyando catchment area, we have nine areas we have rehabilitated," he said.
He added: "We have 225 projects for the community development in Kisumu worth Sh660 Million shillings."
At the same time, Environment CS Prof Judi Wakhungu said that official commissioning of the sewer system is a big boost to the development of Kisumu city.
She added: "An improved sewer will most importantly reduce pollution load into the lake. We are aware that pollution is one of the factors that contribute to the infestation of Lake Victoria by water hyacinth."
Prof Wakhungu said that the reduced water pollution will also diminish the associated water-borne diseases.
