The Kiambu County Government has been challenged to work on improving the quality and standards of education at the Early Childhood Development (ECD) level, seeing that many ECD centres lack basic infrastructures.

Speaking on Wednesday at Maria-ini ECD Centre, Gituamba Ward MCA Samuel Ng'ang'a said many ECD centres in his ward lack basic facilities for use by the young learners.

"It is very discouraging to see that some of these ECD centres have poorly built classrooms that are not even cemented. Others have old roofs that leak when it rains,” said Ng'ang'a.

He added: "These are young learners and when you expose them to such hostile conditions, you make them form a negative perception towards education because they believe that that is how life will always be when in school.”

Ng'ang'a said the county government needs to allocate more funds to be used in improving infrastructures at the ECD centres saying that this will motivate the kids and change their perception towards learning.

The MCA was speaking after receiving a report from Uwezo, an NGO that has been assessing how various county governments have been managing ECD education in their counties.
