Nyamira County government has reiterated its resolve to support farmers in a bid to improve the county’s agricultural sector and ensure food security.
The Cabinet Secretary in charge of Water and Irrigation Nyamira County James Gichana early Wednesday said the county government is committed towards making sure that the county produces enough food for the whole county, and surplus that can be sold to other counties and countries.
He said they have already set aside funds to do research on crops that they will grow in the county all year long to ensure food security.
Gichana said he is impressed by the economic growth rate in the county, which he said has been brought about by infrastructure expansion and the corporation the area farmers are showing towards improving agriculture sector.
The CS called upon farmers to start growing other crops, especially short term foods such as potatoes, which have not been highly favoured in the area.
“We recently launched irrigation campaigns in the county so that farmers can be able to produce food all year, and by doing so, we are sure we are secure,” said Gichana.
He also cautioned farmers to observe good agricultural practices as Kenya loses most of its produce during growing and post-harvest losses.
