The county government of Nyamira has been challenged to support persons living with disabilities by taking care of their daily needs.
The appeal comes after a team named 'Nyamira Youth Can' traversed Gachuba ward on Friday to meet with the 'neglected class of citizens.'
Chairman Justus Maeche questioned the commitment of the county government towards helping the disabled in the county, arguing that the aid, which was launched by the county government in 2014, had been hijacked by people masquerading as representatives.
He urged the county to carry out an audit on the number of people who should be genuine beneficiaries of the kitty.
“We have been traversing Kitutu Masaba for the better part of this week and now in Gachuba and I can authoritatively report that our people living with disabilities have been completely ignored. No civic education has been done and the kitty that was launched by the county government to help them is diverted to anonymous people,” he said.
Mr Maeche accused the department of gender and disabilities in the county government of failing to carry an audit on the anonymous people alleged to have received the funding.
“They are living in deplorable conditions and most of the time, they were represented by members of their families in all meetings we summoned. The department of gender and disabilities has never carried an audit on the people who got funding from the county government,” he claimed.
During the tour, 20 people suffering from walking disability were given wheel chairs by the youth group in collaboration with the World Vision.
