Nyakoe Ward Representative Cosmas Ombura has asked the Kisii County government to support small scale farmers as a way of alleviating poverty from among county residents.
Addressing a youth group during his visit to a tomatoes farm in Nyakoe that is run by area youths, Ombura asked executives to table bills that will help a common farmer benefit from government programmes.
He said farmers in the county had the potential to produce more than they do currently, but they lack funds to carry out the projects adequately.
“A population that has food security at family level will plan for other development matters. All leaders should strive at ensuring that small scale farmers get food for their families,” he said.
He asked Governor James Ongwae to increase the stock of subsidised agriculture to benefit more farmers in the ward and the entire county.
He also congratulated the youth for taking an initiative to venture into farming, and urged them to apply for Uwezo funds so that they can expand their produce.
“We want to see as many youth as possible venturing into agribusiness because that’s the next source of employment,” he further added.
He called upon small scale farmers in the area to also apply modern farming technology methods, so that they can reap big from their small pieces of land.
