The Kisumu County Assembly is set to partner with UN-Habitat in the management of public space to support socia-economic development.

Deputy Speaker Pamela Omino said the Committee for Planning, Housing and Industrial Development will work with the United Nations agency in ensuring the project is implemented.

In a motion table on Thursday by nominated MCA Pamela Odhiambo and seconded by nominated MCA Caroline Ogot, the MCAs urgued that the project wil move a long way in ensuring public space in the county is well maintained.

“Madam Speaker the UN-Habitat has shown interest to do capacity building on public spaces and inventory of public spaces in our county,” said Odhiambo.

Ogot said Kisumu residents have a right to clean, spacious environment adding that the project will help achieving such goals.

Nominated MCA Caroline Agwanda said the project will benefit people living with disability in terms of mobility within Kisumu town.

“Accessibility for persons with wheelchairs, visually impaired, hearing impaired is becoming a challenge. The streets are congested, I believe with this project the UN-Habitat will factor these challenges,” said Agwanda.

Nyakach West MCA Elijah Omondi asked the house to involve the Kisumu County executive members in the implementation of the project.

“We need to enhance Public-Private Partnerships like other counties. Kisumu has been reluctant on this. We need to create other avenues for revenue collection,” said Omondi.
