Kisumu County government has been asked to deploy professional and trained counsellors to learning institutions.

Speaking to Journalists on Tuesday at the county assembly premises, a section of the MCAs said that there was need for the county government to deploy counsellors in learning institutions in the county.

Nominated MCA Lydia Odhiambo noted that the number of cases of university and college students committing suicide due to many problems is on the rise.

MCA Odhiambo said that most university students lack a source of counselling and guidance hence end up making many uninformed life choices.

“The problem we have in the society today is that most people assume that all university and college students are old and mature enough to make informed and wise decisions when faced with problems forgetting that these youths are undergoing a transition stage from parental dependency to independence to make their own decisions away from their parents and guardians,” said MCA Odhiambo.

Her sentiments were echoed by her nominated counterpart representing persons living with disabilities Caroline Agwanda who asked the County Executive Committee member for Education Jennipher Kere to deploy counsellors to primary and secondary schools to guide the minors during their stages of adolescence and puberty.
