Residents in Kisii county have been urged to give evidence against defilers. Lack of adequate information on perpetrators of sexual crime has proved to be a stumbling block in the fight against cases of defilement in the county.
According to Bonchari Sub County Children officer, Judy Begi there are a lot of cases that have been dropped by the Kisii court for lack of evidence and she called upon the whole community to be responsible and bold to give evidence.
“Several offenders claim that there was consent between them and the victims. It becomes difficult to find the truth in this since the victim does not have relevant identification documents to prove their age”, she said.
She said some cases have had to be determined through other processes such as taking DNA tests of the teeth through dentists, a move that can be compromised as the age assessment could be falsified to the benefit of either party.
During a visit in her office she said the county is also grappling with defilers on the run, several of whom are yet to be apprehended or reported to the relevant authorities.
She took issue with some parents and village elders for hiding information which should be passed to the authorities on suspected defilers so that they could be brought to book.
