A matatu driver has been arraigned in a Kikuyu Law court for allegedly operating with a fake driving licence.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate James Ogweno on Friday, Zacharia Kariuki was accused of committing the offence on July 15, 2015 along the Kikuyu-Nairobi road.
The prosecutor told the court that traffic officers, while conducting a crackdown, stopped the driver who was driving a Nissan matatu and on conducting a quick search realised that he had a fake driving licence.
He was arrested and taken to Kikuyu police station for questioning before he was arraigned in court.
The prosecution then presented the fake licence, which the accused possessed during the arrest, in court as exhibit.
The accused pleaded guilty to the offence saying he learned how to drive through a friend and acquired a fake licence because it was cheap.
He however said that for the three years that he has been driving he had not caused any accidents and pleaded for lenience since he is the family’s bread winner.
The accused was sentenced to one year imprisonment and issued 14 days to appeal.
