Kisii County Education Board Chairman, Henry Onderi has called for enactment of policies to guide school trips to avoid loss of lives and injuries to schoolchildren.

Addressing the press in Kisii town, Onderi said the policy should clearly indicate the purpose of the trips, the required children’s handlers and the best transportation means among others.

"The policy should he should also provide for safety and security measures for the children in case of emergencies," he said.

The Chairman noted that some accidents during school trips could be avoided if children are well attended to by teachers who accompany them and provided with caregivers.

"Some trips for the young children in early childhood development classes can be left out as they do not make sense," he said.

This comes after a tragedy in which seven pupils who were to sit for their final examinations this year from Murang'a County drowned in Kwale during a school trip. He also refuted claims that Mock examinations were not the cause of unrest in schools.

"There is need for counselling for students in schools to ensure whatever issues they are going through do not lead them to violence," he added.

The Mock examinations, he said, are meant to prepare the candidates for the final national exams and should not be done away with.
