Women in Kiambu County have launched an initiative that seeks to mentor the girl child and promote their education in the County.
Kiambu Grading Girl Mentorship Program was launched on Monday by St Ann girls secondary school principal Risper Wangui in Thika.
Wangui said most girls in Central Kenya have not excelled because they lack appropriate mentors.
“This program is to give back to our society after most of us achieved our intended life goals. As a team of learned ladies, we have come together and decided to mentor our own from this region,’’ said Wangui
Wangui said they will be holding seminars in girls' schools in order to share their experiences, challenges and successes in an effort to grow hope and confidence in them.
"Most girls’ potential remains untapped because they have been denied the chance. We will be unlocking these potential as well as bringing on board the men soon," added Wangui.
The principal said the group will talk to the girls in their formative years about issues of self-worth, health, setting goals and achieving their aspirations.
“Our seminars will be taking place in girls’ secondary schools, where the facilitators will share their experiences and how they climbed up the ladder,” said Nancy Njoki, a facilitator.
The seminars are scheduled to start once schools reopen and according to Wangui, the events will be happening on weekends.
