Educationists in Thika West Sub-County have been challenged to support adult literacy enrollment in the area and mainstream it as an integral part of development.

Sending the appeal on Friday from his office, Thika West Adult and Continuing Student’s Education officer Francis Kariuki said literacy was an essential ingredient in wealth creation and enjoyment of modernity.

“It is a privilege that the national government has set up adult learning centres in our neighbourhoods and has further encouraged the illiterate in society to fully utilise the service,” said Kariuki.

‘We equip our learners with skills to better manage their businesses and agricultural ventures as well as offering library services, tailoring and dress making courses, carpentry and masonry among others,” he said, adding that the already enrolled students have perfectly progressed.

The officer noted that through collaboration between the government, donors and financial agencies, adult education has improved the quality of lives for those who enrolled.

He observed that they train adults to become literate to assist them acquire skills such as operating their bank accounts, M-Pesa services, reading and writing.

Kariuki commended the area religious and political leaders for their massive support in making his area programs progressive.

“We have been successful this far from the overwhelming support we receive from political and religious leaders,” said Kariuki.
