First year students at Egerton University, Nakuru Town Campus have been urged to behave responsively during their time in college.
While addressing the over 200 students at the college's Westend campus on Monday during a meet-the -principal event, Principal Lena Nakhone Wati advised the students to take charge of their destiny and avoid risky behaviours which could land them in trouble.
"Joining university is a fresh start with a lot of possibilities, kindly stick to your ambitions till the end and do not allow detractors to confuse you," she stated.
She also called upon the students to observe morality and keep off individuals who were keen to lure them into drugs, cults and irresponsible sexual behaviour.
While revisiting some of the incidents that have lately bedeviled the institution including a case in which a fifth year medical student allegedly killed his girlfriend in the college's hostel and later committed suicide in Mtwapa, the principal reiterated calls to have meaningful relationships that would be beneficial to both parties in the long run instead of cutting short lives.
She also advised the students to always live within their means and to always seek faster and efficient medication in case they fall ill, adding that the institution was still coming to terms with the death of a third year student owing to a severe headache.
She called upon female students to avoid striking relationships with their male lecturers to get favourable grades terming it an exercise in futility and a waste of time.
On his part, the university's dean of students, Absalom Makinda urged the students to accept themselves and share their problems out maintaining that his office was always open to help in any situation it could.
