Gusii elders have urged the county government to erect a monument in Kisii town in honour of the late freedom fighter Otenyo Nyamatere who died in 1950 during the fight for independence.

Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebration in Gusii Stadium, the Secretary General of the Gusii Council of Elders Charles Mokaya said there is a need for the monument to be erected in the town to show that the people of Gusii community participated in the fight for independence.

“When this statue is erected in the town, just as it has happened in other parts like Nairobi, it will be a historical contact that will make the community feel to have fully contributed to the freedom that is now enjoyed by all citizens," Mr Mokaya said.

He also said the elders council will want names of all those who were executed to be listed down on the monument like including Onyoni Mokoro, Mosomba and Mandegere Mogambi.

He called on the governors of Kisii and Nyamira Counties to ensure there is cultural upkeep so that the rest of the generation will be able to see the monument.

“Other counties have already started to honour the fallen heroes and that should also be done to our county too,” he added.
