The government has been accused of fuelling the teachers’ strike that entered the third week on Monday.

Central Nyakach ward representative, Elijah Omondi said that time had come for elected leaders to add their voice into the issue and ensure learners do not continue losing valuable time.

Omondi said some parents had paid school fees in advance yet their children were still at home.

“Parents are stuck with their children at home yet they have committed some money to school fees. As leaders we must now get involved in the matter,” he said.

The MCA said that elected leaders should now engage the education officials in the counties as a way of finding the solution to the salaries dispute.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Monday, Omondi said the government must obey the court order. He says, despite the fact that education is not devolved elected leaders at the county level needed to be involved in finding a solution to the problem since the people they represent are affected.

“I know education is not devolved, but as a representative of the people, I must come in if my people are not getting the services they require,” he said.

Omondi says that had the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Teacher Service Commission, teachers would have been sacked if they had failed to obey the court order.

"Nobody is above the law. The government must just find an amicable solution into the pay dispute instead of taking hard line stand," he added.
