Several families in Mombasa County who will be affected by the construction of a six-lane dual-carriage highway have been assured of compensation.
The project coordinator Charles Obuon said that the affected families will be compensated as they pave way for the construction of the highway from Mombasa to Mariakani.
Mr Obuon said valuers have already identified the persons to be compensated as 820 structures will be demolished for the road construction.
Mr Obuon was speaking to residents of Mazeras in Mombasa on Monday to set up a committee that will address compensation issues.
He however said that individuals who put up structures on road reserves after July 30 last year will not be compensated.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) will begin the Sh22 billion project by the middle of next year.
He said, “The agency will compensate the affected families before the start of the project to avoid unnecessary delays since the tendering process has already begun.”
“KeNHA surveyors are verifying the list of all the people who will be affected by the project and thereafter the value of their property will be announced.”
“We have received Sh10 billion from African Development Bank to build 11kms Mombasa-Jomvu section. We are in talks with German Development Bank for the funding of the remaining part of the road.”
Among structures to be demolished are public institutions, churches, residential houses and perimeter walls.
The construction of the six-lane dual-carriage highway will help reduce congestion of trucks ferrying cargo from the Mombasa port which cause traffic jams.
