Speaking in Nyamache in an interview with this reporter, Nyamache sub-county Fisheries officer Thomas Kebwaro said using the chemicals will put fish life into danger.

"We have just met farmers at Itumbe, Nyamache and Nyacheki telling them how water, a resource in fish farming is hazardous when in excess," he said.

"We highly discourage people from using chemicals near ponds because of the danger of contaminating them."

He said there was a tendency by some farmers to spray chemicals to crops during the rainy season.

This, he said endangers the lives of fish in fish ponds.

"It is also not advisable for them to use the chemicals as they will be washed away by the rains. This not only amounts to losses on the part of farmers but to the crops as well since the crops will lose the chemicals before absorbing the chemicals."
