The county government of Nakuru has been requested to repair broken sewer lines in an efffort to avert new cases of cholera in the county.

Residents of Rhonda and Pondamali estates on Thursday urged the government to heed the call early enough so that the anticipated El Nino rains does not trigger a fresh outbreak of the disease that plagued some parts of the county mid this year.

Led by community elder Peter Mureithi, the residents expressed their fears of a reoccurrence of the deadly disease if measures are not put in place to avert it.

"We are sitting on a time bomb. Should the sewer system be left in its current condition, then a fresh outbreak of cholera wouldn't be a surprise," he said.

"We are requesting the taskforce set up by the governor to address the effects of El Nino rains, to quickly fix and repair drainage pipes around this place for our own safety," he added.

The residents further pleaded with the county government to take stern measures against people who were not keen on keeping their environment clean and lacked proper toilets.

The two estates were some of the worst hit in the county by the epidemic in May and June. Others included Kaptembwa, Shabaab, Mwariki and parts of Naivasha.
