Former Kitutu Masaba MP Walter Nyambati has entered the Nyamira gubernatorial race ahead of the 2017 general election, ending speculation on the seat he has been eyeing.

Addressing hundreds of his supporters at Miriri area, Nyambati said he had qualifications to lead Nyamira people to the desired destination besides slamming the development record of the incumbent.

Mr Nyambati, who chairs the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation, said Nyamira needed visionary leaders who could tackle the corruption vice besides minimising the alleged nepotism in employment to the county government.

“I have all it takes to be Nyamira governor and let my people know from today that I am a serious contestant. The current leadership has failed to tackle corruption and fight the alleged nepotism. It needs political willingness that I am ready to offer,” he said.

Nyambati’s exit from the Kitutu Masaba race may ease political tensions that have escalated in the recent past with pundits giving the incumbent, Timothy Bosire, an upper hand to retain his seat.

“This will give Kitutu Masaba politics a new dimension and Bosire is likely to retain his seat now that his fierce challenger has quit for another seat,” said Dr Stellah Omari, an economics lecturer at Kisii University.

Mr Nyambati’s entrance to the gubernatorial race will even make the race more interesting as the incumbent, John Nyagarama, continues to get pressure from many other contestants over what they call ‘mismanagement’ of county government.
