Doctors from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in conjunction with their counterparts from the Netherlands have conducted four successful kidney transplants.
Speaking to journalists at the hospital’s premises, MTRH director John Kibosia said the surgeries which started on Monday saw four patients undergo successful kidney transplants.
"The surgeries were done by our local doctors under the supervision of their counterparts from the Netherlands and that the four patients are in stable conditions. We have signed a memorandum with them to be conducting kidney transplants after every three months," he said.
He added that local kidney transplants will save costs incurred by patients who have to travel abroad for treatment.
“We are conducting the kidney transplants at a subsidized rate of Sh600,000 where Sh300,000 goes for surgery while the rest to drugs as compared to going to India where they charge over Sh2.5 million," he added.
He said cases of patients with kidney failures have increased where the hospital receives over 20 new patients per month.
