A 36-year-old woman was on Thursday morning arraigned before a Kisumu law court to answer to charges of fraudulently receiving Sh75,000. 

Mary Wakari denied the charges before chief magistrate Esther Maina for the crime allegedly committed on July 17 this year in Kisumu. 

According to the prosecution, the accused defrauded the family of Johnston Opondo the money after alleging that he could assist their daughter get a scholarship with a South African university. 

Wakari, who claims to have spent five years in the South African education sector, told Opondo that there were open scholarships for Kenyan students and all they had to do was to pay Sh75,000 to cater for processing of documents, an idea Opondo bought as he had a daughter who had just cleared form four. 

Opondo raised the money and handed it over to Wakari on July 17, 2015. 

Wakari had told him that she was to get back in a week’s time, something that never happened. 

It prompted Opondo to report the matter to the police after Wakari failed to answer his calls. 

Wakari was released on cash bail of Sh25,000 pending the hearing of the case on January 13 next year
