A funds drive held at Kiabonyoru Catholic Church on Sunday was abandoned midway after two political rival groups engaged in fierce exchange over the perceived discrimination in the award of CDF cash for development.
The two groups, one allied to Borabu MP Ben Momanyi and the other allied to the MP's rival Dr Nyandoro Kambi, could not heed to calls by religious leaders to desist from engaging in confrontation, prompting the conveners to end the function prematurely.
Speaking to this reporter, Catchiest John Omwana said the two leaders were expected to be in attendance and blamed their followers for the stalemate.
“Everything was cool till our guests who happened to be followers of rival camps arrived. They were given a chance to address the congregation and politics took center stage as expected. We had to call it a day because all was not going on well,” he said.
Unconfirmed reports claim some of the people who disrupted the event were ferried from far and it is not known who transported them.
When contacted however, Dr Kambi denied claims of transporting people to the harambee to offer him support since the area is perceived to be a political base of Mr Momanyi.
“I do not believe in hooliganism and I have not sent any of my team prior to the meeting. I was on my way their before receiving the bad news. I condemn the incident with strongest term possible,” he said.
Efforts to reach MP Momanyi for comment on the issue did not bare fruit since he could neither respond to the calls nor text messages.
