Farmers in Gatundu North sub-county have been advised to take up fish farming to boost their incomes as well as their health.
Gatundu North Sub-County Fisheries Officer Raphael Mwangi speaking to farmers on Tuesday at Gachege Market, said there is a ready market for fish as many Kenyans are now eating fish unlike before.
"We are going round teaching farmers in this area on the nutritional value of fish and the entrepreneurial benefits they can get from fish farming," said Mwangi.
He said farmers who have embraced fish farming seriously were now reaping the benefits due to the increased demand for fish especially in the neighbouring Nairobi County.
Mwangi added that they are also trying to dissuade farmers from relying on tea as their sole source of income.
"Tea market is controlled by global prices and sometimes farmers bear the brunt of low tea prices. That is we are helping them to compliment their source of income," he said.
Mwangi also noted that over-reliance on maize as the staple food was likely to expose the area to food insecurity.
