Former Gatundu North Parliamentary seat aspirant John Mariga has encouraged farmers in Gatundu North to embrace indigenous poultry farming saying it has become profitable.

Speaking in Gakoe market during an agricultural exhibition on Wednesday, Mariga said the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) has developed local indigenous chicken that are viable commercial-wise.

"Indigenous chicken business is becoming popular due to its high returns as compared to hybrid chicken farming. Little investment is required to start up the farming and losses are minimal," said Mariga.

He also encouraged the youths who depend on their parents land to consider the option as just a small space is required.

"I know youths have small or no land to start big investments. But with the little they have or by making use of their parent's farms, they can do their poultry farming right there and realize their dreams," he said.

The politician further noted that small-scale farming has become a major force behind the Kenyan economy and therefore could not be ignored.
