Kamenu Ward MCA Mary Hussein has warned garbage collectors against reckless dumping of waste in undesignated areas.

Speaking in Makongeni on Sunday, Hussein said some garbage collectors were dumping waste haphazardly instead of dumping it at the nearby Kang'ooki dumpsite.

"Let me warn those garbage collectors who cannot dump their waste at the dumpsite that we are not going to tolerate them. The garbage they are dumping everywhere around this place is a health hazard and an environmental risk," said Hussein.

The MCA noted that a cleanup campaign initiated by her and the area MP Alice Ng'ang'a two months ago had borne fruits but the said garbage collectors have been watering down the gains made.

"Makongeni had become clean and adorable after the campaign but the same cannot be said of the place two months later," she said.

Hussein has now appealed to the county environment department and National Environment Management Authority to deal firmly with the offenders found contravening the law.
