A family in Garissa town is demanding the immediate release of a religious teacher who was allegedly arrested four days ago and is yet to be taken to court.
Said Omar, who is a madrasa teacher at Takwa in Garissa Sub-county, was arrested three days ago by people who identified themselves as police officers but he is yet to be charged in court.
His family, led by Mr Noor Bare, said they are living in fear of losing Omar since that has been the trend whenever a madrasa teacher is arrested.
"The law stipulates that if one is a suspect, he should be taken to a police station, record a statement and then be charged in a court of law within 24 hours. But this is not what we have been seeing," Bare told journalists in Garissa Town on Friday.
Baare argues that there is no point of holding a suspect for more than 72 hours against the law if there is no evidence to charge them in court.
They have now given the police 24 hours to release him or charge him in court or they will move to court to demand his release.
"We have been looking for him everywhere to no avail but the police must produce him. Madrasa teachers here are never found when taken away by police," Bare lamented.
