Women in Mwiki ward, Ruiru sub-county are lagging behind in development and business, according to Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo.
Speaking at Mwiki SDA Church on Saturday, the legislator challenged women to give men a run for their money in business and other sectors of the economy.
“I believe in the saying that ‘what a man can do, a woman can do better’. If given the right mentorship, environment and support, women can shape the economy if they take up the initiative and start projects to generate income,” she said.
She said women entrepreneurs in the county should be identified and recognised so as to inspire young girls who may want to venture into business later.
She added that women who are ready to take up challenges and turn them to opportunities are the corner tones of any vibrant society and therefore urged area women to ensure that they form groups and act with a common development aim.
Gathogo, however, asked women to make use of the Uwezo Fund to help them steer their projects a notch higher.
She noted with concern that majority of the applicants and beneficiaries of the kitty are youths.
“Youths are outdoing you slowly and you are just lagging behind without ideas. Let us utilise maximally the kitty provided by the government,” she insisted.
