Gatundu North Sub-County agricultural officer Elizabeth Mukora has asked farmers in the area to take the warning on El nino rains seriously.
Speaking to journalists in her Kanjuku office on Tuesday, Mukora said many farmers have a habit of ignoring the weather forecast which leads to many of them incurring huge losses.
"Nowadays many farmers say that the meteorologists' weather forecasts are never accurate and therefore can not rely on them. However, what they ought to understand is that the probability of the predicted occurrence happening is usually high and therefore the need to be cautious,” said Mukora.
Mukora said farmers should ensure that they harvest all their crops by October when the rains are set to begin to prevent them from going bad.
At the same time, she warned farmers against early planting saying that many crops might not be ready by the time the rain begins.
"Some farmers plant their crops early in anticipation of October short rains but this time round we are told it could be different. Let us take caution,” she said.
