Residents of Gatundu North in Kiambu County were on Friday treated to an amazing fish meal by a farmer in his bid to market his produce.
James Mwangi alias ‘Fish’ said he made the decision as part of a marketing strategy.
“Although majority of our residents eat fish, most of them are unaware that they can find the commodity locally and that is why I came up with the idea,” he said.
Mwangi who owns more than four fish ponds said marketing is his biggest challenge.
The fish farmer strategically chose the venue in Kamwangi town where the county headquarters are located to get more customers.
It was a beehive of activity as the county employees bought the ready lunch that had been brought right to their door steps.
The fish was all sold out within one hour as the county staff could not resist the sweet aroma of the fried fish.
Meanwhile, Gatundu North farmers have been urged to embrace fish farming to boost their incomes as it takes up less space. Fish has a high nutritive value.
Beth Wangari, an agriculture field officer in Gatundu North sub-county said the county government provides free fingerlings and fish feeds to willing farmers as it seeks to boost fish farming in the region
“There are more than 161 fishponds across Kiambu but the county has more potential as the county’s climatic conditions are more favourable for fish farming.”
