Learners from Gesima Ward will get free tuition during the December holidays as a way of covering for time lost during the five-week teachers strike.
Speaking on Tuesday at his Gesima backyard, area MCA Ken Atuti said his leadership will facilitate free tuition in all secondary schools from the region with possibilities of incorporating primary schools still under discussion.
Atuti said the move will see students from ten secondary schools from the region complete their syllabuses apart from doing thorough revision for major exams.
“We are all aware that our schools remained closed in September and I am quite sure many of them had not completed their syllabi. The tuition will give them an opportunity to complete the syllabi and perhaps help them revise sections that they feel weren't addressed properly in their third term,” he said.
He says that he has gathered Sh500,000 with the aid of area residents living in United Kingdom to facilitate the program that will see students attend classes till lunch time before breaking for home.
“My administration in collaboration with a section of area residents living in UK will issue a cheque of Sh500,000 to facilitate the exercise. It’s not a big deal because the money will be used to pay teachers who will volunteer to provide their services,” he added.
He said the program was likely to precede as planned regardless the outcome of the letter he had written to area education officer Robert Obiria.
“We all appreciate education and I don’t think somebody will hinder such a brilliant idea. In fact, I am on the final touches to see whether we can support the exercise for our children in upper primary,” Atuti added.
