Residents of Giasaiga Sub-Location of Sameta Sub-County in Kisii County have been asked to embrace hygiene and good sanitation practices to avert cholera and other waterborne diseases.
Giasaiga Assistant Chief, James Mogo, asked the residents to prepare themselves well to avert the adverse consequences of the El Nino rains, which he said will lead to not only destruction of infrastructure, but will pose serious health implications as new and emerging diseases are expected as consequences from the heavy rains.
Speaking on Wednesday during a public baraza at Kenyoro Health Centre in the area, Mogo challenged residents from the area to ensure they have modern pit latrines and toilets in place as a measure to control spread of diseases like cholera during the heavy rains.
"I am putting all residents from my area of jurisdiction on notice. The country is expecting El Nino rains which will not only disrupt infrastructure, but will also affect our health situation since many diseases related to poor hygiene and sanitation will emerge and pose serious health challenges to our people," said Mogo.
Mogo directed community health workers within his area to intensify inspections in the homesteads to ensure area residents observe hygiene and good sanitation practices as a mitigation and preparedness measure ahead of the El Nino rains.
