Gilgil Sub-County Education Officer Samuel Njathi has warned students in the sub-county against abusing drugs.

Speaking at his office when he hosted Gilgil head teachers, the education official decried high cases of drug abuse in some schools.

Officer Njathi said that in collaboration with relevant authorities, investigations have been launched concerning the alleged drug abuse among the area schools.

“We are deeply concerned that some of our students could be abusing drugs in schools. This activity could deteriorate academic performance in learning institutions,” said Office Njathi.

Njathi noted that drug abuse in schools is becoming a big problem and asked teachers and parents to provide their support in taming it out.

He noted that reports indicate that some students in the sub-county sneak from their schools to go drink in nearby bars.

The education officer warned that action will be taken against teachers who fail to tame the vice among students in their schools.

Njathi asked head teachers to form counselling and guidance committees to educate their students on matters of drug abuse and its effects.

The education officer at the same time asked the government to shut down bars and pubs operating near schools noting that some bars are operating near schools and are a nuisance to some students who can barely concentrate in class.
