Students in Thika West Sub-County who attend public schools are set to benefit from free distribution of sanitary towels.
Speaking in her Thika town office Wednesday, Thika West district children’s officer Rebecca Kariuki said the initiative by the Ministry of Education will see the girls get the pads that will last them for the period they will be in school this third term.
Kariuki noted that the project is a positive initiative bearing in mind that most of girls waste almost five days every month during menses.
‘The initiative granted by the Ministry of Education will be an annual event and I believe that the girl-child education will improve despite being out of school for an estimated five days every month,” she said.
She praised the move highlighting how girls performance in her sub-county has been affected by the lack of the sanitary towels.
“I believe this is one of the programmes that many Kenyans would like to continue for many years as it touches the heart of common mwananchi,” Kariuki commended.
She appreciated the government’s move while urging other stakeholders to chip in to ensure that the kitty does not run dry in future.
“Personally I appreciate the programme bearing in mind that as a mother and a children’s officer in this area, I have experienced many girls who are passing through hard times during menstruation,” she said.
