Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has received a rare backing from a section of residents in Kitutu Masaba Constituency, a region that is perceived to be hostile to his governance.
Most residents in the constituency have been spearheading campaigns to compel the governor to resign for allegedly discriminating the area.
But on Sunday, residents of Magombo Ward urged the people of Nyamira to give Nyagarama time to fix things in the county. They also asked him to focus on improving the region’s economy.
“It is two years down the line ((after the 2013 elections) and all we hear is politics of personal destruction. The county government should concentrate on development rather than mere political competition. We are behind the governor and we want him to continue focusing on improving the lives of residents,” said John Aboki on behalf of the residents.
They urged those with dissenting views to dialogue with the county leadership and dismissed their recent boycott of negotiations with the governor.
“Those critical of Nyagarama’s leadership should consider having a dialogue with him. They were invited recently and declined and this is not the way to go,” he added.
They appealed to the government to allocate funds to the dwindling tea sector which is the main economic activity in the county.
“We depend on tea farming and the sector isn’t doing well. The county government has the obligation to chip in and fix the issue. I know the governor can do it because he has been in the tea sector before,” added Gideon Onchoke.
