Kiambu County farmers have been urged to upgrade their dairy cows by utilising Artificial Insemination (AI) services available at livestock sub county offices.
Kamwangi AI officer Jared Murimi said the county livestock veterinary group has some of the best quality semen sourced from Kabete AI station in Nairobi.
"These groups have sexed semen so that a farmer is sure that after his cow has been served with the semen the calf produced will be female thus increase in dairy herd and subsequent milk production," he revealed.
The officer regretted that the semen brought at the post is not in high demand and it is not used as fast as it is required.
Mr Murimi called on farmers in the county to take advantage of the availability of AI services to increase milk production to meet the high market demand.
"Despite the favourable climate for dairy farming here in Kiambu, we still have milk deficit while the county is a net importer of 37% of the milk for local consumption," he added.
The Kamwangi AI post was established in 2015, courtesy of the World Bank in collaboration with the government of Kenya in 2008 and it has been supplying semen to farmers in five sub counties; Kiambu county- including Thika West, Gatundu North, Gatundu South, Kiambu and Juja sub counties.
