While most people would dare not keep goats in Nairobi, this is not the case for Bilal Musa who lives in Kibera.
Born and brought up in North Eastern, 55-year-old Bilal looked after his father’s goats and donkeys and that is how he developed passion for goat rearing.
“When he moved to Nairobi, Bilal sought employment in vain. I decided to try out goat rearing. I worked at a construction site to raise Sh10,000 with which I bought three goats. I worked hard to get them food and after two months, I sold them at Sh7, 000 each,’’ he said on Wednesday.
“I saw how profit making the goats would be to me. I now started keeping goats as my full time job. However, I face a lot of challenges,’’ he said
‘’Goats are very stubborn animals. When I take them out to graze, I have to get some two people to help me look after them because they run to the roads and can be knocked down by vehicles and motorbikes,’’ he added.
His neighbour Mahmud Shakir too complained of water shortage and lack of enough food for the animals.
“There is no grass for the goats and we cannot get enough water for them. Sometimes we walk for a long distance to get water and grass. This is tiresome,” he said.
