The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Thika branch Chairman Joe Mungai has asked the government to pay the teachers their dues as directed by the Employment and Labour Relations Court on June 30.
Speaking to journalists in his Thika office on Tuesday, Mungai said the government ought to address the problem of teachers' salaries other than 'hide' in courts.
"The problem of teachers' salaries has been fought by our union for decades and we are not about to give up. The government can run to court but it can't hide. The last time they took our unions there, justice prevailed but they are not willing to honour that. We will however wait for the appeal ruling as we have trust in our courts," said Mungai.
The chairman said the government is 'buying time' in courts instead of implementing the up to 60 per cent salary increment that the court awarded to teachers.
"Postponing or delaying to solve a problem doesn't help anything. It just complicates it and the earlier the government knows this the better," he added.
