Kathiani MP Robert Mbui has urged the national government to resolve the teachers strike and end the stalemate.

He said that with the teachers’ strike finishing its third week and the government insisting that it cannot meet the demands of teachers, the students continue to stay away from schools and losing out as they were not being taught.

The legislator said that the government was exposing students to unnecessary suffering adding that some may altogether leave schooling for good.

Mbui made the remarks in Kathiani Constituency during a meet the people tour on Friday.

The MP said that the national government should suspend the laptop project to raise money to pay teachers. He added that education is the only tool to end poverty in the society but the government is lagging behind when it comes to education.

"Children should be in class by now and not loitering outside. It's shameful that education is at a standstill in the whole country just because we don't have money to pay teachers," he said.

He called on parents to take care of their children even with the directive to close all the schools, both private and public starting next week on Monday.

At the same time, Mbui said that crude traditions that retard development in the region should be shunned by the residents.

He said that it was unfortunate that some people in the area are still clinging to the outdated traditional practices like female genital mutilation (FGM). He said that such practices had far-reaching effects as most of the girls who undergo FGM drop out of schools to get married.

He cautioned that people who were secretly carrying out such retrogressive practice risked being arrested and prosecuted under the current constitution.
