The Chairman of Imams and Muslim Preachers in Uasin Gishu County Abubakar Bini has urged the government to re-open schools and settle teachers’ salary increment call.

Speaking in his office on Tuesday, Bini said that the government ‘over-stepped’ its mandate by closing all schools, and urged its reopening with immediate effect.

“Closing schools is not the remedy to teachers’ strike but instead it made it worse. I urge the president to postpone the Kenya National exams considering the time teachers have been on strike for them to complete their syllabuses,” he said.

He reiterated that the government is not taking serious the teachers’ strike, and yet thousands of students are suffering.

“it’s really sad that its now four weeks since the teachers’ strike commenced and yet no one seems to bother and our children are staying at home,” he noted.

“The president, in his speech on Sunday should have called for TSC, KNUT and government to a round table and negotiate with teachers on how the amount is going to be paid since sincerely teachers deserve the pay increase,” Bini added.

He further urged the president to act with speed and resolve the strike and avoid affecting the education sector.
