Bishop Cornelius Korir of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret has called for investigation into the rising cases of fires and unrest in schools.

Speaking to journalists in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Korir raised concerns over rising cases of fire outbreaks which have led to deaths, injuries and loss of property in schools.

He said that the recent case in Stephjoy Boys High School raises serious issues on the safety of students especially in boarding schools.

Korir urged the government through the Ministry of Education to establish the causes of the fire outbreaks and take appropriate action.

“The government must immediately investigate and put an end to the fire cases we are seeing in schools,” said Korir.

The Catholic Bishop said that safety of students and staff must be given priority. He noted that safety measures in most of the schools across the country are poor.

The Bishop recommended that a safety and security audit for all schools to be conducted and corrective measures put in place to prevent any loss of life. He also urged school management boards and teachers to engage more with students

"The failure by school boards, teachers and parents to monitor the behaviour of students has allowed them to engage in these evil acts," he said.
