The National Youth Council Kisumu County representative has urged the national government to actively engage the youth in development and decision making.

While addressing the public on Tuesday during the Mashujaa Day fete at the Jomo Kenyatta sports ground in Kisumu, Catherine Akinyi urged both the national and the county governments to put measures that will ensure youths are also actively involved in governance.

“Achieving development requires active participation of the youth because they are the future of our country, “she said.

She also added that including the youth in decision making also provides a learning platform for them and this in turn can help improve the economy of not only the counties but also in the country.

“Young people are interested in making their own contribution in helping steer the country forward. They also want to be partners in development,” she said.

She also indicated that the young people have been marginalised yet they are the ones vulnerable to poverty due to the few employment opportunities.
