Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has ordered the immediate implementation of a requirement that primary and secondary school students from Molo and Kuresoi report to class at 8am and leave by 5pm.
Previously, students from schools in the area reported to school as early as 5am and left as late as 8pm.
“This could be the reason our students are being targeted by criminals who are taking advantage to kidnap and kill. With immediate effect, no students shall report to school any earlier than 8am,” Mbugua said.
The governor also ordered increased police presence to beef up security in Molo sub-county. The move comes after bodies of three murdered female students were found in different locations of Molo.
Speaking to residents who held demonstrations which ended at the Molo district commissioner’s offices, Governor Mbugua condoled with the families for the loss of their loved ones.
“We have discussed intensely with the relevant security heads from the area to fast-track investigations. We want to immediately apprehend the perpetrators of this hideous crime,” he said.
The governor, who held a high level closed door meeting earlier, said the authorities had taken immediate measures to boost security in the sub-county. The meeting was attended by among others county commissioner Mohammed Birik.
Mbugua added: “We will take short-term action for now as we seek to resolve this matter. In my term as the district commissioner we had set up the administration police camp here in Molo but I am informed it is no longer in operation.”
The governor promised to re-establish the AP camp to address the issue of rising insecurity.
Governor Mbugua who was accompanied by his deputy, Joseph Ruto, later visited the mortuary and viewed the bodies of the deceased.
